The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004 create a range of obligations for Scottish public authorities.
This course introduces the key concepts and practicalities of day-to-day FOISA compliance.
The course is specifically designed to support colleagues who are new to FOISA and tasked with handling requests and reviews.

Key concepts and definitions and understanding what information is in scope of the legislation. Differences between Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004. Providing advice and assistance.
Rights of review and appeal
Internal review process and appeals to the Scottish Information Commissioner.
Handling requests
Validity of requests. Tracking, monitoring and managing the process. Providing advice and assistance. Timescales, cost limits and fees. The information search. Content of responses. Internal review processes.
Exemptions and exceptions
Overview of key exemptions and exceptions and how to apply them.
